I have come to the end of the road. An entire plethora (yes, plethora) of things have all come to a head that point me to the conclusion that IT IS TIME TO STOP SMOKING CIGARETTES.
They have been with me through thick and through thin, through good times and bad, for over 30 years now, but I have to stop. Maybe it'll help (me) if I list the reasons. Certainly it helps hold me accountable to put it out here publicly.
1) My good friend Laurie has flown out to Boston this week to be with her mother who is dying of cancer. It started last year with lung cancer, and has now taken over her entire body.
2) My father can not make it to the top of the stairs without grasping for his inhaler.
3) Caleb is already getting it in his mind that smoking is a really cool thing to do...after all; everyone he cares about seems to do it. NOT GOOD!
4) We have a granddaughter coming in September and I don't want her mom (Kate) to worry about us stinking her up when she's here.
5) It's terribly ageing and would be counterproductive to the facelift I plan to have for my 50th birthday ;-)
6) Cigs are expensive, offensive and all that other negative stuff.
7) My mom did it almost 3 years ago, so I can, too.
The first day I remembered all the times I've dropped unlit cigs while driving and couldn't retrieve them from under my seat so just left them there. I went digging around under there and sure enough found two; which I smoked right away. The second day I anxiously waited for Melissa to come pick up Caleb so I could bum one off her. The third day I thought "Surely I've dropped more than 2 under my driver's seat all these years!" and found one more, broken; which I taped and smoked. PATHETIC! Honest to God, kicking the heroin will be easy after this. (KIDDING!) So anyway, today's the fourth day and I'm feeling pretty positive about sticking with it. I just have to. A couple of unexpected side benefits: I'm not drinking 2 or 3 cocktails every night 'cause it's just not fun without a smoke, and I'm only drinking 1 or 2 lattes in the morning (opposed to the usual 5) for the same reason. Already feeling less puffy and more sober all around. Yikes, I may just get so danged close to perfect as to be utterly intolerable ;-)
YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!

and add another reason- you can't get a face lift if you smoke! They won't operate on you and you won't heal easily either- ....so glad you are quitting- best thing for ya!!!!! You will thank yourself down the road.
